Cellana Engineering
On March 29th I visited with one of our newest customers on the Big Island, Cellana Engineering. This was a great opportunity for me to work with, and learn more about the booming BioFuel market. I spent the entire day with the engineers, biologists, and lab workers discussing our UV equipment that is currently in use on-site, as well as, providing everyone with hands-on training and maintenance for these units. Cellana has several commercial units within their existing demonstration facility in Kona, and there are plans for them to be incorporated into their commercial plant on Maui.
Through their full scale facility, the goal at Cellana Engineering is the large scale production of feed stocks for biofuels, aquaculture and other animal feeds, as well as, other valuable products from marine microalgae, while simultaneously converting CO2(the primary greenhouse gas) emitted by stationary sources of fossil fuel combustion, such as: power plants, oil and gas refineries, cement factories, and ethanol
plants.
We sweat a lot, laughed hard and ate far too much pizza... all in all, a fantastic experience!! Thank you Cellana Engineering.

Keahole Point

Keahole Point
As the sun slowly set on the afternoon of March 30th, I met with the hatchery and production manager at Keahole Point Fish. Keahole Point Fish partnered up with Kona Blue Water Farms in an effort to further advance open ocean production of Amberjack (Kona Kampachi), pioneering the fish farm site off the big island of Hawaii. Keahole has assumed responsibility for the reconfiguration of the offshore net pens for ongoing operations of the farm site. All brood stock and fingerlings are maintained within their land based recirculation systems.
After a fantastic tour of their hatchery facility, we spent time reviewing their existing needs while discussing our newer equipment line as they will continue expansion of this facility as production demands increase. I was so impressed with their facility and the level of care bestowed upon our UV systems. 10 commercial units in operation since their facility went online in 2001 and only 50 yards from the ocean waves!

Adrian Megay visits Taylor Shellfish
|

Taylor Shellfish Farms
After eating lunch at the Pine Tree Café on March 30th, I continued my client meetings and had an opportunity to meet with one of the pioneers of oyster production in Taylor Shellfish.
For over 100 years, the Taylor Family has been growing shellfish, starting with the tiny Olympia Oyster from the pristine waters of Puget Sound. Their dedication to their family heritage has resulted in a modern company that is now the largest Manila Clam producer in the United States. Taylor Shellfish cultivates a greater variety of shellfish, more than any other shellfish grower, and yes, they still farm the rare and world-renowned Olympia Oyster.
Hatchery manager, Greg Jakob, took time out of his busy schedule to meet with me and review their current facility layout. Many companies have made their way into their facility with UV equipment, only ONE has withstood their strict demands... Emperor Aquatics!!! I was told there were two important keys in gaining their business:
- Our durable design, which is important as these units are out in the harshest of environments.
- Our reliable UV dosage capabilities. No issue with bacterial concerns since placing our UV Systems within their facility.
Successful disinfection achieved!!!
10 of our UV systems are in place there and more are to follow as they expand their production.

Adrian Megay visits Kona Coast Shellfish
|

Kona Coast Shellfish
On March 30th, 2011 I had an opportunity to meet with the fine folks at Kona Coast Shellfish. While I was there I spent a considerable amount of time with their hatchery and facilities managers discussing our existing commercial UV equipment on site, as well as, providing them with recommendations on a new system currently in design.
Kona Coast Shellfish, LLC is a new shellfish hatchery company, created in 2006 as a joint venture between Coast Seafoods Company and Penn Cove Shellfish, LLC. Their hatchery was constructed in 2007 near Kona, on the big island of Hawaii at Keahole Point; adjacent to the Kona airport at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA). The hatchery was constructed for the production of Pacific Oysters and Manila Clam larvae and seed. Our commercial UV unit, currently in use within their larvae system, was originally manufactured 8 years ago and is still running strong! We are proud to our see our clients paying attention to maintenance schedules, such as,
replacing their quartz sleeve gaskets and o-rings on an annual basis! With proper maintenance they should easily get another 8 years plus out of their unit.

Emperor Aquatics Featured in The Sanatoga Post

FORD ISLAND HI Customized bio-security equipment, designed and manufactured by a Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township company, is being installed as part of a 30-acre campus of new and renovated scientific facilities now being built in Hawaii for the nations official weather forecasters, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The well-known federal agency and the U.S. Navy broke ground last month (Dec. 7, 2010) for construction of the final phase of NOAAs Pacific Regional Center. The vast complex on historic Ford Island at Pearl Harbor will support coastal and marine resources, and predict weather events, tsunamis, and climate changes in the Pacific. Construction is expected to be finished by October 2012.
Protecting some of the water supplies that feed the campus will be special ultraviolet (UV) sterilizers that are the products of Emperor Aquatics Inc., 2229 Sanatoga Station Rd., Pottstown PA.
The annual December observance of Japans surprise World War II bombing of Pearl Harbor, a date that President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed will live in infamy, was specifically chosen to launch construction of a three-building, $131 million laboratory and office plaza that will serve as the heart of NOAAs Hawaii headquarters, the Naval Facilities Engineering Command reported.
Emperor is a 21-year-old company located in the south-central portion of the township between U.S. Route 422 and the Schuylkill River. It manufactures high-quality water filtration and UV germicidal equipment to disinfect water-borne microorganisms that cause diseases in fish and other aquatic life. Back in May (2010) Emperor announced on its website that it was shipping several custom units of its SafeGUARD-brand Shell and Tube UV sterilizers for the NOAA facilities bio-security program.

The Importance of UV Transmittance
|

UV transmissibility is the absorption of UV light by water, particles and dissolved materials. Twenty years ago UV transmittance (UVT) was seldom a topic of
discussion. Today, we can not legitimately select a UV system for a specific application without identifying %UVT.

Marine Harvest

Marine Harvests Egg Incubation Program
Emperor Aquatics, Inc. would like to congratulate Marine Harvest on the success of their Egg Incubation Program. "There has been some discussion within
the industry about the benefits of upwelling incubation systems", acknowledges Dean Guest, Freshwater Operations Manager with Marine Harvest. Emperor
Aquatics, Inc. was proud to manufacture Upwelling Incubation Jars for Marine Harvests' Egg Incubation Program.
Each upwelling incubator "can individually contain as many as about 15,000 fertilized eggs, nearly the equivalent of three trays", and they can individually
"run at different temperatures to speed-up or retard hatching."
Our units have "proven to be a success, cutting labor costs and being easy to
service." The constant up-flow water circulation holds the eggs in constant suspension, eliminating stagnate areas while forcing lighter "dead eggs" to the
top. "Janet Stanford, one of the three personnel who maintain the jars and remove any dead eggs, said that they're easy to remove into a bucket using light
suction from a primed pipette." This drastically cuts down on egg maintenance time, and the incubators themselves "require only very minimal maintenance."
Emperor Aquatics, Inc.'s Upwelling Incubation Jars are made of polycarbonate, ABS with PVC plumbing and are supplied with gate valves for precise
flow control for system customization.

We would also like to thank Hatchery International for providing an informative article about Marine Harvests' facility in the

Hollings Marine Laboratory
4-23-10: Ten years ago Hollings Marine Laboratory purchased various types of Emperor Aquatics, Inc. filters that include: Fluidized Bed Biological Filters
and Foam Fractionators (Protein Skimmers). Today this equipment is the life-suppport used in their Red Drum Fish Research Program. Photos sent to us by
Mr. Colden Battey reveal that the equipment still looks as if it was recently installed; a result of proper installation, operation and maintenance.
Photo One: View of culture tanks with Emperor Aquatics, Inc. Foam Fractionators and Fluidized Bed Filters in the background.

Photo Two: Emperor Aquatics, Inc. AquaFOAM Foam Fractionator equipped with ozone generator and ORP controller. The Emperor Aquatics, Inc. Fluidized Bed Bio-Filter
is positioned behind the Foam Fractionator with it's effluent discharged and processed by the foam fractionator.
Photo Three: This photo demonstrates how our unique dual-venturi manifold functions. Both venturi's are fitted with valves for easy vacuum adjustments.
Adjusting the venturi vacuum is critical, especially when injecting ozone, allowing the operator to dial-in a precise vacuum that matches the production
capacity of the oxygen concentrator and ozone generator.
This system is fitted with an oxygen concentrator that strips out nitrogen, delivering
92%-98% oxygen to the ozone generator that increases ozone production 3 X's compared to using air. Additionally, using air (that contains 80% nitrogen)
to generate ozone leaves behind a nitric acid by-product that coats and fouls the ozone producing corona cells dramatically reducing the efficiency
of the generator.
Another critical factor addressed by our dual venturi manifold, and delivering a venturi solely to ozone injection is the
elimination of nitrogen from the injection process. Nitrogen goes into solution much easier than ozone gas, and if present during the ozone injection
process, nitrogen can severely reduce ozone solubility.
Photo Four: View of Emperor Aquatics, Inc.'s Fluidized Bed Filters and Foam Fractionator (Protein Skimmer).

Hollings Marine Laboratory is a unique collaboration of governmental and academic agencies including NOAA's National Ocean Service, the
National Institute of Standards and Technology, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the College of Charleston and the Medical University
of South Carolina.

Fish Grader
3-13-10: Emperor Aquatics, Inc.'s visit to The Conservation Fund Freshwater Institute in Shepherdstown, West Virginia had our engineer, Don Conwell, delivering a large "clam-shell" fish grader we built for their Lake Perch Rearing Program. Our removable, white grader-plates are the highlight of this grader; available with different grading openings for 50 gram to 180 gram fish. With hoists and manpower, the grader was lowered into place and tested successfully. Emperor Aquatics, Inc. can help you with similar fabrication.
