Retail Fish Systems - Impress Your Customers with Healthy Fish!

Designing a functional and profitable retail fish system requires a commercial approach, meaning that the system must be capable of successfully achieving important filtration requirements. A retail fish system is not a backyard pond, but rather an intensely stocked fish holding system intended to show customers large numbers of fish in a small area. These systems must be designed with optimal solid waste removal and biological filtering capabilities. This requires specialized filters and husbandry not commonly associated with backyard ponds.
Whether you design a retail fish system of your own or purchase one of ours, the same filtration rules apply. Solid waste must be removed on a routine basis, and biological filters must operate clean and free of oxygen starving solid waste. The objective is to design a system that addresses water circulation, using it to suspend solid waste and remove it with the mechanical filter. The biological filter must not be allowed to accumulate solid waste; it must be fed solids-free water, so that it operates clean, continuously and undisturbed.

The diagram below illustrates recommended water circulation and plumbing. Our simple, gravity overflow recirculating system provides optimal circulation combined with effective filtration. It's also easy to assemble and maintain. The number and size of the system's holding tanks establishes our plumbing, turnover rate, and required filtration. Plumbing Notes:

Tank Plumbing, including both surface overflow and bottom drain, allows easy removal of surface pollutants and bottom solids.

Drain Pipe Manifold accepts individual tank plumbing, delivering dirty water to the sump for filtering. The drain manifold, elevated at the point that it enters the sump, establishes a constant water level in the tanks.

Clean Water Return Manifold brings water, which has passed through the SMART HO UV, back to the tanks. The two-inch diameter manifold is equipped with valves, one per tank, to control the amount of water entering the tank. Clean water entering the tank is directed downward toward the tank bottom, using the exiting water to suspend solids.
Retail Filtration Systems

Impress Your Customers with Healthy Fish!

Our Retail Filter System is designed for commercial applications. It's not a collection of pond filters plumbed together, but rather a system designed to filter water for retailers holding large numbers of ornamental fish with multiple fish holding tanks. Our system provides adequate water circulation, efficient solids capture, and exceptional biological filtering potential combined with efficient UV sterilization. The system's maximum filtering capacity is 3,000 gallons, with a turnover rate of 6,000 gallons per hour. We've designed this system to be expandable. Start with ten 150 gallon tanks and ad more tanks later!

Retail Filter System Packages include a complete, commercially designed filtration system with plumbing components (valves and PVC fittings) for five or ten 150-gallon fish holding tanks (tanks and PVC pipe not included). Each system comes with complete instillation instructions and tank purchasing information.

How the Retail System Works Diagram.
1. Sump
The polypropylene sump serves as a central filtering station, with dirty water from the fish tanks flowing into the sump by gravity for filtering.

2. Filter Bags

Dirty water from the fish tanks enters the sump, flowing through the filter bags, where solid waste is trapped and held until cleaned. We recommend using 200-micron filter bags. Filter bags are cleaned biweekly and reused, lasting four to six months.

3. Bee Cell Skimmer-Bio Filter

The Bee Cell Skimmer-Bio Filter is a dual-function filter; first biologically filtering and then separating dissolved waste. Water enters the filter through an air venturi injector that joins fine air bubbles, creating oxygen-rich water as it enters the vessel. Once inside, the water circulates through the neutrally buoyant Bee Cell Media Bed. The Bee Cell Media creates a moving biological bed. It is self-cleaning and delivers a huge surface area, creating optimal conditions for healthy colonies of nitrifying bacteria. Once biologically filtered, the water and air mixture creates a "foam head" containing dissolved organic contaminates that collect at the top of the filter where they are separated and removed from the water.

4. SMART HO UV Sterilizer

The SMART HO UV is matched precisely to the pump's flow capacity, exposing waterborne bacteria and algae to 30,000 UV microwatts. This exceeds the required UV exposure rate for waterborne algae and harmful bacteria.

5. Sequence Pump

A high quality Sequence Pump operates the system, supplying water to the Bio-Skim Filter and SMART UV, then back to the fish tanks.
